Why I Write Erotic Fiction

Good Question. I can only speak for myself and all I can say is that it’s come easy to me. So why not. Whether or not it is good… I’ll let each of you be the judge of that. But let me tell you a little bit where it all came from.

I’ve always been a storyteller! I’ve dreamt of being that old dude sitting in the middle of a pack of grandkids telling true… maybe slightly embellished, stories about my life, travels, and adventures. But that vision grew into being a literary author one day. I read my favorite authors and developed ideas for my own stories. I had one once and was maybe 50 pages into a children’s story. I was a kid at the time, so what else did I know to write about? Unfortunately, my spiral notebook that I wrote in was lost and I had no heart to rewrite it.

As a young adult, I grew up in the age of Penthouse Letters when it was still being published and you could buy those little half-sized books at the local convenience store. Reading about other people’s erotic experiences, stories, and lifestyle intrigued me. Then I got into Anaïs Nin and became enthralled and captivated. I didn’t know of any other guys reading erotica. I kept that shit to myself! To me, it was educational. Unlike porn, I felt like I was learning something that wasn’t readily privy to me. I was learning to be creative and imaginative. I’ll probably do a blog post on the differences at some point.

I still desire to be a storyteller. I still plan to write mainstream books, as well. Erotica is something I can cut my teeth on. As a photographer, I’ve done art nude for quite some time. As a professional, I never got bored with my photo work that paid the bills. I’d do commercial, product, portraiture, and sometimes I’d shoot boring subject matter because it paid the bills. However, I never got burnt out, even to this day. Why? I always had my nude art to fall back on! It refreshed me and helped me stay in the game! I improved myself, but learning better techniques, learning more about the use of light, and I stayed in a constant state of educating myself. i also bought new gear all the time. A new camera does not a great photog, make. HOWEVER! I upgraded my gear or bought a new lens to do better nudes. And that same gear helped me do better with the shots that brought in the money!

I think I hold the same concept with erotic fiction. I write because it’s fun and I have a passion for it. But in turn, it keeps me from being burnt out when I write other things that bring in the money.

“A Tale of Jesse” by Ellington Redd

I love what I do! And I finally completed this particular short story that took me a while to figure out the nuances of my character interactions. “A Tale of Jesse” is an erotic romance about Jesse, a small-town country girl from Iowa. She marries her high school sweetheart, who was the former star quarterback. Things don’t go well for her as she comes to term with how foul her husband is. He drinks too much and he’s a habitual non-remorseful cheater. He’s a bad dude. No respect for his wife. Things don’t end well for him, but he leaves a mess for Jesse to endure. She has the resolve to get her life on track again and after 16 years, she moves to Nashville, Tennessee to begin again.

This is the 6th short story published on Smashwords. I’m going to talk about the other books soon. Today, I’m doing final edits for Book 1 of my “Sister Queens Sorority” series, which is called “The Benefactors”. Seven books in all in this series. It’s my first novel and the original book was 800+ pages. This was supposed to be a trilogy but each book was like double size with Book 3 being tripled. Therefore I split them into 7 books, instead. Book 1 is about 125K words. I think that is a bit more manageable and I’m comfortable with this.

For now, check out “A Tale of Jesse“. If you hurry, you can still redeem a coupon for a free copy. I hope I get some good responses. I already have some ideas for Jesse’s Part II. S

Greetings…

The first Blog post is always interesting. I write erotic fiction, but I try to be a good writer no matter what genre I put to page.

Who is my target audience?

Women read more erotica than men, but I get the feeling you’ll quickly get a taste for my style or you won’t and that’s okay. Pleasing everyone is a fool’s errand. So, I aim to just write what I feel I can relate to and be convincing with. I have FIVE short stories out right now, using Smashwords, as my primary ePublisher, but they still distribute to another broad range of eBook retailers.

What got me into this?

Good question. I’ve always been writing something and I started writing poetry, then short stories. As a veteran, I began to write erotica to send back home to my wife whenever I was deployed for extended periods of time. I never really did anything with it. It was just for us. At most, I would contemplate writing for Penthouse Forum. I enjoyed reading those stories.

However, all that evolved into a novel I’ve been working on for the last two years. I travel like a backpacking tourist around the world. If I like a place, I’ll stay for extended periods of time… anywhere from 3 to 6 months usually. I photograph artistic nudes and landscape over my travels. But one summer in Nicaragua, something began in me that sat me down for a minimum of 8 hours every single day. I wrote 6 or 7 short stories and realized they all fit as back to back chapters, despite not being an intentional or conscious effort.

I followed it through to see where it took me. Two years later and roughly 2500 pages, I concluded it. An suitable analogy would be Forrest Gump deciding to one day go for a run. Then on the other side of the country he stops and decides that’s enough. The story poured out of me until the tap was depleted. My next problem was publishing. I had no desire to hunt for a publisher and pray for their goodwill to publish and motivation to promote me. I needed to get onto my next story! I chose Smashwords over Kindle Direct for reasons I believe were right for me.

What is next?

I’ll continue to write erotic fiction! It’s fun, so why not? I can learn the Smashwords system to better sell, but I feel good about it. In a month, I’ve had almost 300 readers on my short stories, but I want to really develop my style before putting out my erotic adventure series due out soon. SEVEN books! I’ll talk more about it in the coming weeks. It’s explicit, but damn it… I have excellent plot and character development. This is a story that happens to include all things sex.

So get ready. I hope you enjoy this ride with me. Follow along. Check out my Smashwords profile and check out my current books. I’ll talk about them soon as well.
